Meet the counselor behind the monster

Lori Fitch is a school counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, and author who believes children deserve a safe place for every feeling.
Personal introduction

Before she was an author, Lori was the counselor dancing in the hallway

Lori has spent years supporting students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. She has also worked as a clinical therapist, but the elementary school hallway is where the Counselor Monster truly came to life. Her book, The Counselor Monster, grew directly out of this impactful work. It is lovingly dedicated to her husband, her daughters (Hannah and Sophia), and the very first kindergarten class that welcomed her back to elementary counseling. Lori’s ultimate hope is simple: that every child who reads her story feels safe turning to their school counselor, and ultimately walks away feeling a little more seen, secure, skilled, and loved.
Her days are filled with honest conversations, mindful breaths, puppets, laughter, tears, recess games, and the quiet moments when a child simply needs someone to stay.
How the book began

A nickname filled with love

The Counselor Monster was inspired by Lori’s real work with children. The name may sound silly, but the heart behind it is serious.

Lori wanted children to see that a school counselor is not someone to fear. A counselor can be the person who listens without judgment, helps make sense of a hard feeling, and reminds a child of all the good things that are still true about them.

First-person message

Why I wrote this story

I want children to know that the counselor’s office is not a scary place. It is a place where sadness can be shared, anger can be understood, worries can be spoken out loud, and no one has to pretend to be okay.
I hope this book makes children laugh. I also hope it gives families and educators an easy way to begin conversations that sometimes feel difficult to start. Most of all, I hope every child who reads it feels a little more safe, seen, skilled, and loved.
Dedication

Made with love for the people who helped shape it

The Counselor Monster is lovingly dedicated to Lori’s husband, her daughters Hannah and Sophia, and the first kindergarten class that welcomed her back to elementary counseling. Their love, laughter, and trust live inside this story.
